Foreign Media: South Korea Reported The First Case Of Brain Eating Worm

The Department of Disease Management confirmed that a South Korean who died after returning from Thailand was infected with the disease, which can damage the human brain.
According to the report, the man in his 50s returned to South Korea on December 10 after spending four months in Thailand and was sent to the hospital the next day. He died on the 20th.
This is the first known case of N. flexneri infection in South Korea. The disease was first reported in the United States in 1937.
It is reported that Neeglia flexneri is an amoeba, which is common in warm freshwater lakes, rivers, canals and ponds around the world. The worm is inhaled into the human body through the nose and then enters the brain to destroy brain tissue.
The Korean Disease Management Agency said that the possibility of human to human transmission of the disease was unlikely, but asked local residents not to swim in the area where the disease broke out.
According to the report, as of 2018, 381 cases of N. flexneri have been reported from the United States, India, Thailand and other countries in the world.
