The "Heyuan Viola" was discovered by the research team of the Guangdong Zijin Baixi Provincial Nature Reserve (hereinafter referred to as the Baixi Nature Reserve). It is the third new plant species discovered, published, and named by the research team of the Baixi Nature Reserve in Heyuan, following Guangdong Tonglipan and Zijin Tonglipan. Ye Qinliang, Deputy Director and Senior Engineer of the Management Office of the Baixi Nature Reserve, is a designated figure for this new species.
In February 2021, the scientific research team of Baixi Nature Reserve and the Fan Qiang team of Sun Yat sen University discovered a flowering Viola plant in the western region of Zijin County. They grow on cliffs with purple petals, resembling dancing purple butterflies when the breeze blows. Through long-term monitoring research, anatomical analysis, and comparison with specimens of similar species, literature review, and based on morphological and molecular evidence, a new species of Viola heyuanensis was finally identified, named as Y.S.Huang, Q.L.Ye&Q.Fan.
Ye Qinliang introduced that there are over 660 species of Viola plants in the Violaceae family worldwide, mainly distributed in temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. China is one of the distribution centers of the genus Viola, with over 100 species widely distributed in the north and south of the Yangtze River, commonly known as perennial herbs. Heyuan Viola is a perennial herb with erect and creeping stems, approximately 10 centimeters in height, and its flowering period is from February to May. At present, there is only one distribution point in Zijin County, which is endemic to Heyuan, and the number of adult plants is less than 100. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature red list standard, it belongs to the critically endangered plant (CR), so it is necessary to strengthen the protection of its habitat to avoid human interference.
Ye Qinliang said that the discovery of Heyuan Viola reflects the good ecology and rich biodiversity of Heyuan. The discovery of this new species is of great value to the biodiversity research of Guangdong Province, which has enriched plant species diversity, expanded Guangdong wild plant germplasm resources, added new gene resources to the breeding of ornamental plant species, and played a positive role in promoting the ecological construction of green and beautiful Guangdong. Next, the Baixi Nature Reserve Management Office will continue to increase cooperation with scientific research institutions, increase scientific research monitoring, protection management, publicity and education efforts on rare and endangered species such as "Heyuan Viola", and fully build an ecological safety barrier.
