A Cancer Vaccine Could Be Available By 2030

The battle against cancer may be won within a decade, thanks to research on COVID-19 vaccines, according to a report on the website of Russia Today television.

Pfizer and Bioentine have jointly developed a vaccine to fight COVID-19. A cancer vaccine could be available to the masses by 2030, thanks to research on a vaccine against COVID-19, the German couple in charge of developing it have claimed.

Speaking on the BBC's Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg programme, Prof Wuur Sahim and Prof Ozlem Tiregi said there was "a chance that we could get a cure for cancer or change the lives of cancer patients". The couple co-founded Bioenti in Mainz, Germany, in 2008.

Commenting on a possible timeline, Sahin said a cancer vaccine could be available globally "before 2030."

But they are also trying to take a more cautious approach. "As scientists, we're always hesitant to say we're going to cure cancer," Tiregi said. But she also hinted that the company has made "some breakthroughs."

Scientists say one possible outcome of the pandemic is to accelerate the development of cancer vaccines. Tireghi pointed out that Bioenti was "riding the covid vaccine bandwagon," but now it is also benefiting from cancer vaccine development.

"Now, the COVID-19 vaccine and the experience we gained in developing it is in turn driving our research in the area of cancer treatment," she said.

The doctor went on to say that scientists have "learned how to make vaccines in bulk better and faster" and have gained a greater understanding of the immune system's response to messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA).

Unlike conventional vaccines, which are made from weaker versions of the virus, mRNA technology uses only the virus's genetic code. When the mRNA enters the body, it also enters the cell, where it makes related antigens.

Basically, Tiregui explains, "the mRNA is the blueprint for the enemy's 'wanted' poster," a tactic that helps train the body to find cancer cells and attack them.
