China's first Hypertension Clinical Practice Guidelines were released on Nov 13. The guidelines were developed by experts from various fields, mainly cardiovascular and hypertension departments, and formed 44 key clinical issues and 102 recommendations for hypertension. It is recommended to lower the threshold for the diagnosis of hypertension in Chinese adults to a systolic blood pressure of 130 mm Hg and/or a diastolic blood pressure of 80 mm Hg.

The results indicate that the risk of stroke, especially cerebral hemorrhage, is significantly increased in Chinese young people under 40 years old whose blood pressure is 130-139/80 to 89mmHg. The recommended diagnostic standard of hypertension was changed to 130/80mmHg, which has clear necessity and feasibility for the prevention of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, especially stroke.

Han Yaling, director of the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine at the General Hospital of the Northern Theater Command of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, said the guideline recommends lowering the diagnostic value of hypertension, fully reflecting the concept of prevention and early prevention and treatment, and taking a more positive attitude towards hypertension control. "The average person with high blood pressure should reduce their blood pressure to less than 130/80 MMHG. "Patients with a BP level of 140/90 mmHg or greater may be treated with two or more combinations or a single pill combination." She said the guidelines also highlight the importance of reaching the target early, with the time from the start of treatment to the target being less than four weeks to reduce the damage to patients' organs.

According to Han Yaling, although lowering the diagnostic value of hypertension will increase the number of people included in the range of hypertension, the cost of early treatment may slightly increase, but the high cost of subsequent treatment of serious complications such as stroke, myocardial infarction and renal insufficiency will be greatly reduced, and the quality of life of patients will be significantly improved and their life expectancy will be extended.

While reducing the diagnostic value of hypertension, the guidelines also recommend that Chinese adult hypertension patients be divided into 1 and 2 levels according to the blood pressure level. Han Yaling said that the guidelines simplified the classification of hypertension into two levels, which is conducive to theoretical learning and clinical practice, and convenient for clinicians to choose the treatment opportunity, with good operability, and is very beneficial to the promotion of active treatment of hypertension.
