Iran To Review Headscarf Laws

On September 16, Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian woman, died after being in a coma for three days after being arrested by the morality police on suspicion of violating Iran's headscarf law. The incident drew global attention and sparked a continuing wave of mass protests in Iran, with many women burning headscarves in protest.

After the 1979 Islamic Revolution, the Iranian government required all women over the age of nine to wear a headscarf and loose clothing to cover their bodies in public. The country also has a morality police whose main job is to ensure that women adhere to a "dress code," with fines, caning or jail time for violations.

As protests continue in the country, the head of Iran's presidential communications team told the IRNA news agency last week that requests from all sectors of society for a relaxation of the headscarf law had been submitted to the government.

Iranian President Ali Abdullah Raisi also said on December 3 that Iran's Republicanism and Islamic teachings have a constitutional basis, "but there can be more flexibility in the method of implementing the constitution."

Agence France-Presse quoted the ISNA news agency as saying that Montazeri did not specify what changes would be made to Iran's headscarf law. He said the team tasked with reviewing the headscarf law met with the Iranian parliament's culture committee on November 30 and expected a decision within a week or two.
