The UN Security Council Held A Silent Mourning in Memory Of Comrade Jiang Zemin

The Security Council held a meeting on the morning of November 30, under the chairmanship of Harold Ajman, the rotating President of the Council and the Permanent Representative of Ghana to the United Nations for that month. At the beginning of the meeting, Ajman, on behalf of the members of the Security Council, expressed deep condolences on Jiang Zemin's death. Ajman said that the international community will remember Jiang Zemin's outstanding contributions to global peace, security and development, as well as his role in China's reform and opening up, modernization and economic development. At the suggestion of Ajman, all participants stood up and observed a minute of silence for Jiang Zemin's death.

Ajman then invited the representative of China to speak. Geng Shuang, the Deputy Permanent Representative of China to the United Nations, thanked the Security Council for arranging a special ceremony of silence. Geng Shuang said that the death of Comrade Jiang Zemin is an immeasurable loss to the CPC, the Chinese government and the Chinese people. He has made outstanding contributions to promoting the development and progress of socialism with Chinese characteristics, as well as to promoting friendly and cooperative relations between China and other countries in the world.

The Security Council then voted to adopt a resolution on non-proliferation in accordance with the established agenda of the meeting. When the representatives of Russia, the United Arab Emirates, Mexico, Ireland, Norway, Albania and Ghana made explanatory statements after the adoption of the resolution, they first expressed condolences on the death of Jiang Zemin, and extended condolences to the Chinese government and Jiang Zemin's family. The representative of Russia said that Jiang Zemin was an outstanding politician who promoted China to achieve great economic and social development achievements and greatly enhanced China's international status. The representative of the United Arab Emirates said that Jiang Zemin's contribution to China's economic prosperity and stability will always be remembered. The representative of Ghana said that Jiang Zemin had made important contributions to China's progress and prosperity as well as global peace and development.

Earlier in the day, Guterres issued a statement expressing deep sorrow over Jiang Zemin's death and, on behalf of the United Nations, extending sincere condolences to Jiang Zemin's family and the Chinese government and people. The statement said that Jiang Zemin firmly advocated China's participation in international affairs. During his tenure, China has made great economic progress and successfully joined the World Trade Organization.
