"The World Health Organization urges all countries to stock up in response to nuclear emergencies" - The report on the 28th of the Russian Satellite News Agency noted that on the 27th, WHO updated the list of drugs recommended for stockpiling in response to radiation and nuclear emergencies on its official website. This is the first time since 2007. WHO spokesman Margaret Harris said that the list took more than two years to prepare.
According to the "WHO Update List of Key Drugs for Response to Radiation and Nuclear Emergencies" published on the official website of WHO, these drug reserve recommendations include drugs to prevent or reduce the effects of radiation, or drugs to treat damage after exposure to radiation.
"In a radiation emergency, people may be exposed to radiation at doses ranging from insignificant to life-threatening. Governments need to quickly provide treatment for those in need," said Maria Nera, Assistant Director-General of the WHO Department of Improving Population Health, "Governments must be prepared to protect people's health and respond immediately to emergencies. This includes preparing life-saving drugs at all times to reduce risks and treat radiation damage."
According to the list published on the official website of WHO, radiation and nuclear emergencies may lead to exposure to high doses of radiation, which is enough to cause serious health consequences and even death. Therefore, it is extremely important for Governments to respond quickly to such threats. However, according to the annual report submitted to the WHO Secretariat, many countries still lack the basic elements to respond to radiation emergencies. The potential situations considered in this update include radioactive or nuclear emergencies in nuclear power plants, medical or research facilities, or accidents during the transportation of radioactive materials, as well as malicious and intentional use of radioactive materials.
According to the specific contents of the list, the typical radiation emergency reserve includes the following drugs:
·Stable iodine, used to prevent or reduce thyroid absorption of radioactive iodine;
·Prussian blue, used to remove radioactive cesium (Cs) and thallium (Tl) in human body
·Cytokines used to alleviate bone marrow injury in the case of acute radiation syndrome (ARS)
·Other drugs used to treat vomiting, diarrhea and infection
